Cubs trade rumors: Chicago shopping players

The Cubs may move a number of players, including Matt Garza, if they’re able to find good fits prior to the trade deadline.

USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Cubs are shopping some of their players and exchanging names with other teams, according to Buster Olney of ESPN.

The Cubs are currently well out of playoff contention with a 29-42 record on the season, putting them 17 games out of first place in a top-heavy NL Central. The team does have a number of players that could help a contender in the playoff push, however, headlined by starting pitcher Matt Garza.

Garza has made six starts this season after missing the first six weeks of the season with tightness in his side. The right-hander has gone 1-1 with a 4.98 ERA in those games, posting a lower K/9 and higher BB/9 this season than he has the past two seasons with Chicago. The 29-year-old is still an attractive target in a shallow pitching market, however, and should be interesting to a few rival clubs.

Cubs outfielders Nate Schierholtz and David DeJesus could also help teams looking for a left-handed bat as Schierholtz -- whom Olney believes would be a good fit with the Kansas City Royals -- has hit .288/.338/.545 in 208 plate appearances while DeJesus is hitting .260/.318/.445 in 217 plate appearances.

Kevin Gregg may also be an attractive option for a Cubs trading partner looking for bullpen help because the veteran hurler owns a 0.81 ERA with 10 saves this season and has already been linked by Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune as a possibility for the Detroit Tigers' closer situation.
