Jason Vargas injury: Angels LHP placed on DL with blood clot in armpit

The Angels suffered a blow on Friday when Jason Vargas hit the DL with a blood clot.

The Los Angeles Angels placed LHP Jason Vargas on the 15-day disabled list with a blood clot in his left armpit, the club announced in a release on Friday. The move was made retroactive to June 18.

To take Vargas' place on the roster, the Angels recalled RHP Billy Buckner from Triple-A Salt Lake City. Buckner will be joining the roster on Friday.

Vargas' blood clot was discovered in his armpit following his June 17 outing against the Seattle Mariners. The lefty will get a second opinion next week and hopes to avoid surgery.

This injury is obviously not welcome news to an Angels team still struggling to tread water in the AL West. Since being acquired from the Mariners in the offseason, Vargas has a 3.65 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 62 strikeouts in 91 1/3 innings this season.

Vargas held the Mariners, his former team, to two runs while striking out nine batters in seven innings.
