Around the Bases: Friday scores and highlights

Rangers 6, Cardinals 4: Nelson Cruz broke a 4-4 tie in the ninth with a two-run single. Derek Holland struggled badly in the early going, but managed to figure things out and lasted seven innings. Tyler Lyons could not do the same for St. Louis, as he got the hook during a four-run second inning.

White Sox 9, Royals 1: Hector Santiago was dealing for Chicago, going eight innings and allowing three hits and one walk while striking out five. Jeremy Guthrie was not nearly as effective, lasting just 2 1/3 innings and giving up six runs. Bruce Chen didn't provide much relief for Kansas City out of the bullpen either, giving up home runs to Dayan Viciedo and Alejandro De Aza.

Pirates 5, Angels 2: Gerrit Cole improved to 3-0 for the Pirates, allowing two runs over 6⅓ innings. Jordy Mercer went 3-for-4 with a homer, and Pedro Alvarez had a homer of his own to provide the offense. The Angels did get this web gem from Mike Trout:

Brewers 2, Braves 0: Wily Peralta threw seven scoreless innings to out-duel Julio Teheran, who went 6⅓ and allowed just two runs on two hits and four walks. Jean Segura had one of those hits, touching Teheran for a solo shot in the fifth.

Red Sox 10, Tigers 6: Shane Victorino led the Red Sox offense, driving in five runs as Boston's bats roared past Doug Fister and the Tigers. Jon Lester picked up the win but still struggled, allowing five runs on nine hits and three walks over 5⅔. Miguel Cabrera homered for Detroit, his 20th of the year.

Blue Jays 7, Orioles 6: The Blue Jays made it nine wins in a row with a comeback against Baltimore. Munenori Kawasaki tied things up in the seventh with his first career home run and Rajai Davis delivered a two-out single for the walk-off in the ninth. Chris Davis hit his 27th home run off 2012 Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey, who allowed three such long balls in the game.

Yankees 6, Rays 2: Rookie Zoilo Almonte got three hits, including a sixth-inning homer, to become the latest unlikely Yankees hero. David Phelps worked around some trouble to hold the Rays to two runs in 5⅔ innings and the Yankee bullpen shut things down from there.

Mets 4, Phillies 3: Jeremy Hefner somehow managed to keep the Phillies to just three runs despite allowing ten hits, getting big outs all the way through six innings to keep the Mets in it. New York chipped away at the Phillies' lead with RBI singles from David Wright and a game-tying two-run single from Eric Young Jr. Juan Lagares' sixth-inning double put the Mets up for good and gave Hefner the hard-fought win.

Indians 5, Twins 1: Scott Kazmir allowed one run on five hits and didn't issue a walk over seven innings to beat the Twins. Jason Kipnis drove in three runs to lead the Indians' offense.

Nationals 2, Rockies 1: Stephen Strasburg returned to the mound and returned to dominating as well, allowing one run on five hits and no walks while striking out nine. That makes six consecutive starts he's allowed exactly one earned run. Tyler Chatwood was nearly as good, minus the strikeouts, allowing one run on four hits and two walks with four Ks over six. Ian Desmond's seventh inning home run, off Manny Corpas, was the difference in the game. Rafael Soriano notched his 19th save with some help from Adam LaRoche's sweet glove work.

Cubs 3, Astros 1: After a three-hour rain delay, Matt Garza was ready to pitch, racking up eight strikeouts in eight innings and allowing just one run on four hits and two walks. Astros' starter Dallas Keuchel had some good stuff and some bad stuff; he struck out nine and walked just one but he also allowed nine hits, including three home runs. Cubs leadoff man Darwin Barney fell a triple short of the cycle.

Marlins 6, Giants 3: Logan Morrison had a triple and home run, and Miami scored three runs in the eighth inning to beat host San Francisco. However, Giants starter Tim Lincecum did hit a double. Oh, and 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick hit 87 mph on the ceremonial first pitch:

Padres 5, Dodgers 2: San Diego scored five unanswered runs, including a home run by Chris Denorfia, to hand L.A. another defeat, with its ace on the mound no less. Clayton Kershaw allowed four runs on seven hits. Padres starter Clayton Richard left the game after two pitches with an injury, so reliever Tim Stauffer got the win.

Athletics 6, Mariners 3: Yoenis Cespedes hit a pair of home runs to lift the A's. Oakland starter Bartolo Colon allowed three runs on seven scattered hits in eight innings. Nick Franklin accounted for all of Seattle's runs with a three-run homer in the third.

Diamondbacks 11, Reds 5: Paul Goldschmidt hit two more home runs for the D-backs -- he's at 19 for the season -- and Arizona chased Reds' ace Johnny Cueto by scoring seven runs off him in under five innings. However, D-backs' starter Wade Miley failed to make it out of the fifth as well, so reliever Will Harris got the win.
