Shane Victorino injury: Red Sox OF leaves game with lower back tightness

The outfielder has been battling numerous injuries for most of the season.

Boston Red Sox outfielder Shane Victorino left Sunday's game against the Detroit Tigers with lower back tightness, Jenny Dell of NESN is reporting.

Victorino went 0-for-4 at the plate before being lifted for Daniel Nava in the eighth inning. Nava struck out swinging against Joaquin Benoit, stranding Jacoby Ellsbury at second base in a 4-4 game.

Victorino has dealt with the back injury throughout the season. He also hurt his side earlier in the year slamming into the right-field wall at Fenway Park, and spent time on the disabled list with left hamstring tightness.

The switch-hitter signed a three-year, $39 million contract with the Red Sox in the offseason. The outfielder has played well for Boston, hitting .291/.349/.389 in 196 plate appearances. Victorino has also looked impressive in the outfield and on the basepaths this season, as he has accumulated 2.2 WAR this year.

Nava, who has split time between the corner outfield positions this season, will likely move to right field full time if Victorino is forced to spend more time on the DL.
