Peter Bourjos injury: Angels OF hurts thumb, leaves game

Bourjos likely suffered the injury sliding into second base during Sunday’s game against Pittsburgh.

USA TODAY Sports

Los Angeles Angels outfielder Peter Bourjos left Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates with a thumb injury, the Angels announced on their Twitter page.

Before the injury, Bourjos drew a one-out walk in the second inning against Pirates starter Charlie Morton. Mike Trout followed with a groundball to second base, and Bourjos slid into the bag hard to help prevent the double play.

Bourjos stayed in the field for top of the third inning, but manager Mike Scioscia removed the outfielder in the top of the fourth. Brad Hawpe replaced Bourjos in the lineup, taking over in right field. That sent J.B. Shuck to left field, and Trout to center.

The 26-year-old has looked impressive at the plate this season, hitting .333/.384/.460 in 142 plate appearances. Bourjos’ hot bat earned him more playing time of late, but some analysts question whether he can sustain this level of production, as the outfielder currently sports a .398 BABIP.
