Around the Bases: Sunday’s scores and highlights

Here are some scores and highlights from Sunday’s MLB games:

Twins 5, Indians 3: Five Minnesota hitters had multi-hit games on Friday, including Joe Mauer, Josh Willingham and Ryan Doumit. Glen Perkins tossed a scoreless ninth for the Twins to pick up his 19th save of the season.

Blue Jays 13, Orioles 3: Edwin Encarnacion went 3-for-5 at the plate with a double, home run and four RBIs as the Blue Jays offense exploded for nine runs in the first three innings. Josh Johnson tossed six innings for Toronto to pick up his first win of the season.

Rockies 7, Nationals 6: Michael Cuddyer hit his 11th home run of the season, finishing 3-for-4 at the plate. The outfielder has swung the bat extremely well recently, as ESPN Stats & Info noted during the game:

Tigers 7, Red Sox 5: Prince Fielder had three RBIs against the Red Sox, including a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning. Miguel Cabrera went 2-for-4 with a double, raising his average to .370.

Mets 8, Phillies 0: Matt Harvey tossed six shutout innings, only allowing two hits while striking out six Phillies to improve to 7-1 on the season. David Wright finished a single shy of the cycle, hitting two doubles, a triple and a homer.

Rays 3, Yankees 1: James Loney hit a two-out single in the seventh inning, breaking a 1-1 tie to give Tampa Bay the victory. Former Yankee Todd Greene was in town for the old timers game and made an impressive catch in left field with a catcher’s mitt:

Cubs 14, Astros 6: Anthony Rizzo went 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run and a double, while Ryan Sweeney went 3-for-5 with six RBIs. Jeff Samardzija tossed seven innings to pick up his fifth victory of the season.

Royals 7, White Sox 6: The White Sox made a pair of errors in the eighth inning, including a booted groundball by Alexei Ramirez that allowed the Royals to plate three runs in the inning. George Kottaras and Jarrod Dyson hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning for Kansas City.

Braves 7, Brewers 4: Brian McCann hit a grand slam in the first inning off Alfredo Figaro and finished 3-for-4 on the day. Carlos Gomez suffered a left shoulder sprain making a spectacular catch, robbing Andrelton Simmons of extra bases.

Dodgers 3, Padres 1: Adrian Gonzalez and Hanley Ramirez hit back-to-back home runs off Houston Street in the ninth inning, breaking a 1-1 tie. In their 74th game of the season, it was the first back-to-back home runs for the struggling Dodgers in 2013.

Marlins 7, Giants 2: Justin Ruggiano hit two home runs at AT&T Park, including a lead-off home run against Matt Cain. Nathan Eovaldi allowed two runs over seven innings, striking out seven Giants hitters.

Pirates 10, Angels 9 (10): Pittsburgh rallied for three runs off Halos’ closer Ernesto Frieri to tie the game in the ninth inning, then both teams combined for seven runs in a wild 10th inning as the Pirates completed the weekend sweep. Pedro Alvarez homered for the fourth straight game for Pittsburgh, the ninth home run in 21 games in June for the third baseman.
Reds 4, Diamondbacks 2: One day after the double blown saves in the desert, Aroldis Chapman had a chance for redemption on Sunday. He was shaky, allowing two hits and a run, but had a three-run lead to protect so the Reds prevailed. Arizona was held down thanks to a stellar outing from starter Mat Latos, who pitched into the eighth inning.

Mariners 6, Athletics 3 (10): Kendrys Morales hit a three-run home run off Grant Balfour, the second walk-off for Morales. His last walk-off home run was May 29, 2010 with the Angels, which ended with Morales landing awkwardly on home plate then missing a year and a half with a broken ankle. On Sunday in Seattle, however, his teammates wanted to make sure that didn’t happen again.

Cardinals 1, Rangers 2: After a three-hour rain delay, the nightcap finally started in St. Louis. Matt Carpenter opened the scoring with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the sixth, but the Rangers grabbed the lead in the top of the seventh on RBI singles from Leonys Martin and Ian Kinsler. With one out and two runners on in the bottom of the ninth, Pete Kozma lined into a game-ending double play.
