New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez has been medically cleared to play in rehab games starting July 1, Michael O'Keefe and Teri Thompson of the New York Daily News are reporting.
Alex Rodriguez injury update: Yankees 3B cleared to play next week
Team doctors cleared Rodriguez to start playing in games on July 1.

Rodriguez underwent offseason hip surgery, and has been on the disabled list for the entire season. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has not picked an exact date for Rodriguez to begin his assignment, but told O’Keefe and Thompson.
“it sounds like it’s on schedule. He’s been running, throwing, fielding, and I know it’s approaching. It’s coming.”
The infielder is expected to join the High-A Tampa Yankees to start his rehab assignment. Rodriguez will also receive some playing time in Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton before returning to the team. Cashman expects Rodriguez will need 50-75 at-bats, or 20 games before returning to New York.
The Yankees currently own a 41-34 record, and sit 2 1/2 games out of first place in the AL East. All five AL East teams are currently over .500, and the division looks like it will remain competitive all season. A healthy and productive Rodriguez would provide a big boost to the Yankees after the All-Star break.
