Mark Teixeira injury: Yankees 1B still feeling pain in wrist

Teixeira may need to undergo season ending surgery if the injury does not improve.

New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira is still feeling pain in his wrist a week after receiving a cortisone shot, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told Wallace Matthews of ESPNNewYork.com.

Teixeira is battling a partially torn tendon sheath, an injury he originally experienced swinging off a tee on March 5. The switch-hitter missed the first 53 games of the season with the injury, then returned to play 15 games before heading back to the disabled list.

Teixeira hit .151/.270.340 in 63 plate appearances during his return, hitting three home runs and driving in 12 baserunners.

Cashman acknowledged that the injury continues to bother Teixeira, but told Wallace “we’re trying to work through it.” The general manager also said that season-ending surgery is a possibility for the first baseman.

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista suffered a fully torn tendon sheath last season, and had to undergo season ending surgery after a failed attempt at rehab. Cashman estimated before the season that Teixeira had a roughly 30% of needing the surgery, telling Peter Botte of the New York Daily News "that would be the worst case scenario."
