Dylan Bundy injury: Orioles RHP suffers setback in elbow rehab

The young right-hander will be re-examined after feeling discomfort during a Monday throwing session.

Steven Bisig-US PRESSWIRE

Baltimore Orioles top prospect Dylan Bundy suffered a setback Monday in his recovery from tightness in his forearm and elbow, and is expected to visit with a number of doctors in the coming days to be reevaluated, report Brittany Ghiroli and Derek Wetmore of MLB.com.

Bundy, 20, felt discomfort in his arm Monday while throwing from 120 feet at the O’s training complex in Sarasota, Florida. Baseball America’s No. 2 prospect will be examined by the team orthopedist on Tuesday, then will re-visit with Dr. James Andrews later in the week.

The young right-hander had been coming along nicely since receiving a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection in his right flexor mass on April 29, but was still a ways off from making his 2013 debut. It's unclear how long the latest setback will keep him out, but if the failed PRP treatments of Jonny Venters and Chad Billingsley are any indication, Bundy could be sidelined for a long while.

Selected with the fourth pick in the 2011 Draft, Bundy rocketed through the O’s farm system in his first season with the organization, making it from Single-A to all the way Camden Yards in a matter of months last year. The right-hander posted a stellar 2.08 ERA and 4.25 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 103⅔ innings over three minor-league levels, capping his inaugural season off with 1⅓ innings of scoreless ball for the O’s in late September.
