Kerry Wood discovers dead body in Chicago harbor

The former Cubs pitcher found a man’s body floating in Belmont Harbor while paddleboarding Monday morning.

Jerry Lai-US PRESSWIRE

Former MLB pitcher Kerry Wood made an unpleasant discovery while paddleboarding in Chicago on Monday morning. The one-time Cubs phenom found a man's body floating in the water at Belmont Harbor and immediately called the police, reports Rosemary Regina Sobol of the Chicago Tribune.

The man’s name has not been released, but the medical examiner’s office identified the body as a 40-year-old man from the 5400 block of North Broadway, per the Tribune.

An identification tag on the man’s left wrist indicated that the man had been at the North Side nursing home, and was recently reported missing after being discharged from a local hospital on June 19. An autopsy conducted Tuesday was inconclusive in determining the man’s cause of death.

Wood, 36, and his wife, Sarah, had no comment on the event when reached by the media. The 14-year MLB veteran retired from baseball in 2012 and accepted a position as a spring instructor with the Cubs earlier this year.
