Houston Astros outfielder Justin Maxwell suffered a mild concussion when he unsuccessfully dove for a fly ball in the gap during Tuesday night's blowout loss to the Cardinals, reports Brian McTaggert of MLB.com.

Maxwell, 29, was trying to corral a line drive off the bat of St. Louis second baseman Matt Carpenter in the fourth inning, but was unable to reel the ball in and did a full yard sale on the outfield grass (see: above). The ball eventually rolled all the way to the wall, resulting in a three-run triple for Carpenter.

Maxwell stayed on the ground for several minutes as trainers tended to him, but eventually sat up and left the field under his own power. At the time of the dive, it was unclear whether he hurt his head or re-injured his left wrist, which had sidelined the outfielder for two months earlier in the year.
The Astros have yet to move Maxwell to the special 7-day concussion disabled list, but given that the official prognosis is a mild concussion, it is likely that he’ll end up going back to the DL.
The journeyman outfielder earned a starting gig in Houston’s outfield this season by putting up strong numbers this spring, but has been unable to capitalize on his opportunity thus far because of injuries. Maxwell has been limited to just 27 games this year, in which he’s hit .235/.306/.367 with one home run in 108 plate appearances.
