Dylan Bundy undergoing Tommy John surgery Wednesday

The O’s will have to survive without their best pitching prospect for 2013, and most of 2014.

USA TODAY Sports

Update 3:50 pm: It’s been confirmed -- Dylan Bundy will undergo Tommy John surgery on Wednesday to repair a partial tear in his elbow:

Top prospect Dylan Bundy was considered starting pitching depth the Orioles in 2013, but instead, he's visiting noted Tommy John surgery specialist Dr. James Andrews, according to CBS Sports' Danny Knobler. It's not set in stone that he will undergo the procedure Dr. Andrews is known for performing, but pitchers tend to visit the good doctor for a reason -- Knobler's sources say that the expectation is that Tommy John is in Bundy's future.

That would mean Bundy is out for the rest of 2013, and likely most, if not all, of 2014 as well. That's a huge blow for the Orioles, as they're in need of pitching help, and have already called their next-best pitching prospect, Kevin Gausman, up to the majors twice this season.

Bundy was ranked the top pitching prospect in the game -- and the second-best prospect overall -- heading into 2013 by Baseball America, ahead of the likes of Shelby Miller, Jose Fernandez, and Gerrit Cole. It will be some time before he's able to deliver on his promise like they have, though, as the recovery time for Tommy John surgery tends to be around one year. Given Bundy is all of 20 years old, Baltimore will likely ease him back in, lengthening the span that he's out.
