Scott Kazmir no-hit bid broken up in 7th inning

Kazmir had allowed just a walk through six frames, but Manny Machado would not allow him to post the first no-hitter of 2013.

Joy R. Absalon-USA TODAY Sports

Cleveland Indians pitcher Scott Kazmir had a no-hitter going against the Baltimore Orioles through six innings, but lost it on the first batter of the seventh frame when Manny Machado hit a sharp grounder into left field for a double.

Machado would also come around to score, taking third base on an errant throw by Kazmir as he attempted a pick-off and coming home on a sacrifice fly.

Kazmir has also allowed one walk in the game, to Orioles catcher Matt Wieters in the fifth inning. Kazmir has thrown 78 pitches through seven innings and has struck out four batters.

The last Indians no-hitter came over 32 years ago, when Len Barker threw a perfect game against the Toronto Blue Jays on May 15, 1981. The Orioles were last held hitless on Sept. 1, 2007 by Clay Buchholz of the Boston Red Sox. Kazmir has thrown just one complete game in his career.

On Machado’s part, the young shortstop is on pace for 74 doubles this season. The MLB record is 67, set by the Red Sox’ Earl Webb in 1931. Machado is still just 20 years old.
