MLB comissioner Bud Selig received the 2013 Distinguished Humanitarian Award from B’nai B’rith International on Thursday in New York City, per Paul Hagen of MLB.com.

B’nai B’rith is a Jewish humanitarian and advocacy organization. The organization honored Selig with the award for his efforts in youth education, training, diversity and environmental advocacy, according to JTA of the Jewish Press.

Selig, who has been the commissioner of baseball since 1993, has helped found a number of programs and initiatives to help different communities. Some of these initiatives include the Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities program, the Commissioner’s Community Initiative, and the Hank Aaron Chasing the Dream Foundation. MLB also supports veterans and the Boys & Girls Club while donating to disaster relief efforts.

The commissioner discussed MLB’s role in the community at the award ceremony, quoted by Hagen as saying:

”We use our platforms to promote diversity and tolerance and to raise awareness on issues that demand our attention. We respond to crises and disasters ... knowing we have the influence to set an example for others.

Sharon Robinson, the daughter of Jackie Robinson, and Joe Torre also spoke at the award ceremony.
