Josh Beckett injury update: Dodgers RHP resumes throwing

The Dodgers starting pitcher hopes to avoid surgery on a pinched nerve.

USA TODAY Sports

Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Josh Beckett has resumed a throwing program, per Ken Gurnick and Austin Laymance of MLB.com.

Beckett has been shut down for the past month with a pinched nerve that causes numbness and tingling in his pitching hand. The pitcher has been battling the injury since Spring Training, but wants to avoid surgery if possible.

The starter came over to the Dodgers last season as part of the mega-trade with the Boston Red Sox that also included Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez. Beckett had a 2.93 for Los Angeles last season, but struggled with his injury this year, going 0-5 with a 5.19 ERA in eight starts.

If Beckett can return healthy, it would be a big boost for the Dodgers down the stretch. Los Angeles has underperformed expectations this season; they sit in last place in the NL West with a 36-42 record. The Dodgers, however, are only six games out of first place and are listed as a potential suitor for Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Matt Garza.
