David Price injury: Rays ace to return Tuesday

The 2012 AL Cy Young award winner will take the mound again on Tuesday when the Rays take on the Astros.

USA TODAY Sports

Pitcher David Price will make his first start for the Rays since mid-May on Tuesday when they face the Astros, according to Adam Berry and Sam Strong of MLB.com.

Price landed on the disabled list on May 16 with a strain in his left tricep. Since then, he has made two rehab starts with the team’s Single-A affiliate in Port Charlotte. In those two starts, he threw a total of 7-1/3 innings with 12 strikeouts and just one run allowed. The performance convinced the Tampa Bay brass that their ace is ready to return.

“He’s ready to go,” Rays manager Joe Maddon said. “We felt that pretty strongly. He feels very good.”

Tampa Bay may be getting its best pitcher back at the perfect time. The Rays are currently fourth in the AL East despite a solid 41-38 record. After a slow start to the season, the team bounced back in May going 18-10 for the month. They stalled again in June, however, and are 11-14 this month.

Price began the season poorly, going 1-4 in nine starts with a 5.24 ERA before hitting the DL. During his Cy Young campaign last year he held a .800 winning percentage and a 2.56 ERA over 31 starts.
