Johnny Cueto injury: Reds RHP leaves game in 2nd inning with strained lat

Reds starter Johnny Cueto left his team’s game against the Rangers during the first at-bat of the second inning.

USA TODAY Sports

Reds starting pitcher Johnny Cueto exited his start against the Texas Rangers with a strained lat muscle, according to the team.

Cueto battled through a couple of hits in the first inning to limit the Rangers to just a single run, which came on an Adrian Beltre single with two outs. With one ball and two strikes on Rangers first baseman Mitch Moreland in the first at-bat of the second, Cueto threw a 92 mph fastball that Moreland fouled off. After throwing the pitch, the Reds' starter appeared to be in pain. He then left the game and left-hander Tony Cingrani replaced him.

Cueto has already missed time with injury trouble twice this season, limiting him to eight starts prior to Friday. He went 4-1 over those starts, pitching 47-2/3 innings with a 3.21 ERA. Cingrani has been the primary replacement for Cueto this year and has a 3.12 ERA in seven starts.

There is no word yet on the extent of this latest injury or whether it will mean more time on the disabled list for Cueto.
