Josh Beckett injury: Dodgers RHP to have surgery, out for season

The procedure will help relieve pressure on a pinched nerve in Beckett’s neck.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Josh Beckett will undergo surgery to "relieve pressure on the neck in his nerve area," the team announced on Saturday.

The condition Beckett is suffering from is commonly known as thoracic outlet syndrome. Beckett will travel to Dallas during the week of July 8 to undergo the surgery, and Dr. George Pearl will perform the procedure. Beckett will miss three-to-five months recovering from the surgery.

The starter attempted to avoid the surgery, as he had recently resumed a throwing program. The pinched nerve caused numbness and tingling in his pitching hand, but the starter hoped to work through it and return to the team later in the summer.

Beckett only made eight starts for the Dodgers this season, going 0-3 with a 5.19 ERA. The Dodgers will pay Beckett $15.75 million this season, and another $15.75 million in 2014.

The Dodgers have been linked to numerous starting pitchers on the trading block, including Ricky Nolasco and Matt Garza. The official loss of Beckett for the season may ramp up the team's interest in adding pitching help before the trade deadline.
