MLB Draft 2013 scouting report round-up: 3B Kris Bryant

Kris Bryant has more home runs than most Division I teams, but what does that mean for his prospect status?

Kris Bryant, a third baseman for the University of San Diego, has had a monster junior season and has positioned himself to go in the top five picks of this June’s MLB Draft. A tall, thin player, he still has room to put on muscle, which has many scouts wondering if he will need to move to a corner outfield spot. He had nine home runs in his freshman year and 14 in his sophomore year, so it is not as though his power has come out of nowhere.

His likely landing spot at the moment is with the Rockies, but there is some buzz for him to go as high as second or even first in the draft. As a junior he holds the leverage of being able to go back to school for another year.

What They’re Saying

  • Matt Garrioch, Minor League Ball: “His power is his best asset. He can hit the ball out to all fields. I saw one game where he hit a low and away pitch 420 feet to right-center with ease.”
  • Nick Faleris, Baseball Prospectus: “ His swing can still get long and grooved, but teams will gladly live with some swing-and-miss if it comes with legit 35-plus homer potential.”
  • Jim Callis, Baseball America: “He has out-homered 228 of the 296 teams in Division I. His combination of bat speed, strength, pitch recognition, discipline and barrel ability give him elite power.”
