MLB Draft 2013 scouting report round-up: RHP Kohl Stewart

With a multi-sport scholarship to Texas A&M, Kohl Stewart is one of the more interesting prospects in this year’s draft.

In a draft missing that one can't-miss prep prospect, Kohl Stewart represents the closest thing in 2013. A two-sport commit to Texas A&M, he provides superior athleticism in a 6'3" frame. There seems to be some momentum towards him going to the Twins at pick No. 4, but rumors like that are hard to put much stock in this early in the process.

The general idea here is the he has a similar ceiling to Jonathan Gray and Mark Appel, but the risk is much higher. In addition, signability concerns will always come with a player such as Stewart, who has the option to go to college. The Royals had to pay up a few years ago for Bubba Starling, who was a two-sport commit.

What they’re saying

  • Mark Anderson, Baseball Prospect Nation: “Huge risk associated with him because he is so raw and there are unknowns with the developmental path once he focuses on baseball. Boom or bust type.”
  • Keith Law, ESPN: “He hit 96 mph and sat 92-94 consistently, showing a plus slider at 85-88, a hard curveball at 79-82, and even a few changeups at 83-84 with decent arm speed.”
  • Matt Garrioch, Minor League Ball: “The highest ceiling arm in the draft.”
