MLB Draft 2013 scouting report round-up: OF Hunter Renfroe

Mississippi State’s Hunter Renfroe exploded in 2013, displaying plus-power after struggling during his first two years in college.

Kirby Lee-US PRESSWIRE

Hunter Renfroe is a powerful college outfielder who began to tap into his potential as a junior at Mississippi State. Renfroe played sparingly as a freshman and was underwhelming his sophomore season, hitting just .252/.328/.374. In 2013, Renfroe finally began to show off his best tool, hitting .350/.442/.650 with 15 home runs during the regular season and SEC Tournament. In addition to his tremendous raw power, Renfroe is a plus runner and possesses a strong arm.

Renfroe was previously selected out of high school in the 31st round of the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Boston Red Sox.

What they’re saying

  • Matt Garrioch, Minor League Ball: "After trading Wil Myers in the offseason, the Royals have an opening for a power bat in the OF. Bubba Starling needs time and they need impact in the next couple years. Renfroe could do that for them."
  • Keith Law, ESPN: "Renfroe has always had the tools to be a first round pick but had no performance to speak of in his first two years in college. He really started to put everything together at the start of this, his junior year, showing great raw power that started to carry over into games and a better ability to square up the baseball."
  • Jonathan Mayo, MLB.com: "He's a good runner who's even better underway, and he has a cannon for an arm. He's strong and physical and might very well fit the profile for a right fielder at the highest level."
