Matt Harvey will be limited to 215-220 innings

The Mets want to be careful with their young ace pitcher to keep his arm intact for future years.

New York Mets manager Terry Collins said Saturday the team will limit young ace Matt Harvey to around 215-220 innings in 2013, reports the Star-Ledger's Dave Hutchinson.

Collins talked Friday about putting Harvey on a limit, but specific numbers were not given then. The 24-year-old pitcher has already thrown 117 innings this year, tied with CC Sabathia for fifth most in the majors. Harvey is also fifth in the National League in pitches thrown.

Harvey is currently on pace to pitch around 240 innings in 2013. He threw 169⅓ innings between Triple-A and the majors in just his second professional season in 2012.

Harvey has been one of the best pitchers in the MLB since being called up in late July 2012. Since his debut, Harvey has a 2.25 ERA and 202 strikeouts over 27 starts. This year he leads the NL in ERA, WHIP, and strikeouts.

The Mets are fourth in the NL East with a 33-44 record, likely out of contention in 2013.
