Evan Longoria injury: Rays 3B expects he will avoid DL

Longoria has been suffering from plantar fasciitis in his right foot for a month and irritated the injury Friday.

USA TODAY Sports

The Tampa Bay Rays still do not know how long third baseman Evan Longoria will be out of the lineup, but it does appear he will not need to make a trip to the disabled list, reports the Tampa Tribune.

Longoria is suffering from plantar fasciitis in his right foot and told the Tribune he irritated the injury while running to first base during Friday’s game:

“I’ve been battling with the plantar stuff for a better part of the month now and it just felt different (Friday),” Longoria said. “It felt like it kind of tightened up going down the line. (I) really don’t have a definite prognosis. I know that at least for now, I’m not going on the DL, which is good. I’m pretty optimistic about the way I feel today.

Longoria also said, “It’s something I think is going to threaten me long term.”

The injury kept Longoria out of the lineup Saturday, causing him to miss a game for the first time in 2013. Longoria can play through plantar fasciitis so long as the pain is manageable. With no DL stint imminent, the Rays must feel confident that the pain will be down to the point where Longoria can play soon.

Kelly Johnson is starting at third base for the Rays while Longoria remains out.
