Dodgers recall Chris Withrow, designate Matt Guerrier

After getting hit hard in his last few appearances, the Dodgers have decided to part ways with Guerrier after three seasons.

USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced that they have designated veteran relief pitcher Matt Guerrier for assignment. To take his place in the bullpen, the club recalled Chris Withrow from their Triple-A affiliate, the Albuquerque Isotopes.

Guerrier spent the last two and half years with the Dodgers, posting a 4.24 ERA over the course of 110 innings. He surrendered five runs in his last two relief appearances, likely prompting the front office to make the move. The soon-to-be 35-year-old pitcher figures to be nearing the end of his career in the big leagues, although he could sign on with another club to serve as bullpen depth in the minor leagues.

Withrow pitched in L.A. earlier this season for a brief period of time. Armed with a fastball that sits in the high-90s and a hard slider, Withrow posted high strikeout numbers all throughout the Minor Leagues. He does have a tendency to walk batters, though, and that has held him back from securing a late-inning spot in the Majors until now.

The Dodgers bullpen has been one of the worst in baseball this season, ranking 27th in the league with a 4.38 ERA. Despite being six games under .500, Los Angeles sits just five games back of the Diamondbacks in the National League West.
