Asdrubal Cabrera injury: Indians shortstop heading to disabled list

The Indians have placed star shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera on the DL.

Jesse Johnson-US PRESSWIRE

The Cleveland Indians placed Asdrubal Cabrera on the DL on Tuesday with a strained right quadriceps.

Cabrera sustained the injury Monday in a game against the Yankees. He was running down the first-base line and strained the muscle. He had to be helped off the field by the medical staff.

The team recalled shortstop Juan Diaz from Triple-A Columbus to take his spot. Diaz is batting .211 over 52 games played.

Cabera is scheduled to undergo an MRI in Cleveland Tuesday. There is no timetable for his return, but Indians manager Terry Francona speculated that he could return in roughly four weeks or so. Muscle injuries can depend on the player and circumstance, so not setting a timetable just yet is probably wise.

Francona mentioned that Mike Aviles should see the bulk of the time filling in at shortstop, and that the versatility of his team should help them get through this.

Cabrera is batting .254 with five home runs in 2013 for the Indians. He is one of the better players on the team, and someone will need to pick up the slack for them to continue their good play. They are currently in second place in the American League Central, behind only the defending-AL champion Detroit Tigers.
