Stephen Strasburg has been placed on the DL with a lat sprain, marking the fourth time in his career he will idled by injury.
Strasburg was supposed to throw a bullpen session Wednesday, after being pulled from his May 31 start after only two innings, with hopes that he’d be able to start for the team on Saturday against the Twins. But the team cancelled the bullpen outing and sent him to the DL, dated retroactively to June 1. He’ll be able to return to the active roster on June 16.
The team intends to call up a pitcher from Triple-A Syracuse to start on Saturday. Strasburg joins starter Ross Detwiler on the disabled list, as well as offensive star Bryce Harper, meaning the two players regarded as building blocks of the franchise are both out of commission.
Strasburg’s career has been brief, but nagged by injuries. He hit the DL about a month into his rookie season, and when he returned to action, needed Tommy John surgery, which ended his year after just five starts, forcing him to miss most of the 2011 campaign. In 2012, the team famously restricted him to an innings limit in hopes of protecting the still-recovering arm of their could-be ace, shutting him down in September and forcing him to watch as the team was eliminated in the NLDS.
Strasburg was just 3-5 on the season, but had a 2.54 ERA, a 1.06 WHIP, and had struck out 73 batters in 74⅓ innings, putting him ninth in the National League.
