Biogenesis scandal: MLB reportedly has multiple sources

The investigation into the Biogenesis clinic is not solely expected to rely on evidence from Anthony Bosch.

USA TODAY Sports

Major League Baseball has more witnesses than Anthony Bosch in their case against Ryan Braun, Alex Rodriguez and other players connected to Biogenesis, a source familiar with the investigation told Steven Marcus of the Long Island Newsday.

A number of current players are linked to Bosch’s now-closed Biogenesis clinic, which allegedly provided players with performance-enhancing drugs. According to an ESPN report, Bosch is cooperating with MLB’s investigation.

The investigation is expected to rely on a non-analytical positive, meaning evidence other than a failed drug test. The source told Marcus that “tons” of interviews will help frame the investigation.

Arbitrator Richard McLaren, who helped draft the Mitchell report, talked to Marcus about what kind of evidence MLB will be looking for:

”You want to have as much corroborative evidence as you can find. So to the extent that there were employees, receptionists or whatever at the clinic who might have knowledge of what’s going on, then you want them to testify, verify, corroborate someone else’s testimony, like Bosch.

Any other sources of evidence MLB can acquire will be important to the investigation, as Steven Goldman describes Bosch as a “highly impeachable witness.” There will likely be a lengthy appeals process once the suspensions are announced during which the players will have the opportunity to provide counter-evidence.
