Gerrit Cole likely to make debut on Tuesday

The former No. 1 overall pick may make his debut on Tuesday against the Giants.

USA TODAY Sports

Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Gerrit Cole will likely make his debut on Tuesday at PNC Park against the San Francisco Giants, beat writer Michael Sanserino of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is speculating.

The Pirates need a starter on Tuesday, since Wandy Rodriguez is expected to miss a start because of left forearm tightness. The team is considering internal options for to replace Rodriguez, leaving Cole as the best choice available.

Pittsburgh selected the former UCLA Bruins starter No. 1 overall in the 2011 Draft. John Sickels of Minor League Ball ranked Cole as the best prospect in the Pirates farm system heading into 2013 and the fifth best prospect overall, and profiled the right-handed pitcher:

The results don’t always match the stuff. But the stuff is undeniable, he throws strikes, and ultimately I think any consistency issues are resolvable. Future number one/two starter.

Cole has made 12 starts in Triple-A this season, going 5-3 with a 2.99 ERA. The right-hander has fanned 47 hitters while issuing 28 walks over 68 innings pitched.
