Chien-Ming Wang to sign with Blue Jays

The veteran starter is expected to start for Toronto against the White Sox.

Brad Mills-US PRESSWIRE

Chien-Ming Wang will sign with the Toronto Blue Jays and start on Tuesday against the Chicago White Sox, a move first reported by Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

Wang signed a minor-league free agent contract with the New York Yankees before the season began, but had the option to opt out of his contract at the end of May. The veteran started exercised the opt-out clause on Friday, and the Yankees granted the pitcher his release.

Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun reported that the Orioles were interested in the right-hander, but Wang is instead signing with an AL East opponent. The Blue Jays currently short on starting pitchers, as Brandon Morrow and J.A. Happ are currently on the disabled list, while Ricky Romero was recently optioned to Triple-A after struggling in his only two starts this season. Josh Johnson recently returned to the rotation, making his first start since April 21 on Tuesday against the San Francisco Giants.

Wang owns a career 4.26 ERA in 756 1/3 major league innings. The starter survives by forcing a large number of groundouts with his sinkerball, as he managed to post a 2.33 ERA in for the Yankees Triple-A team despite only striking out 25 hitters in 58 innings.
