Detroit Tigers right-handed pitcher Anibal Sanchez will not make his scheduled start on Sunday due to shoulder stiffness, the club announced on Saturday. Jose Alvarez, whose contract will be purchased by the Tigers from Triple-A Toledo, will start in his place.
Anibal Sanchez injury: Tigers P scratched from Sunday start; Jose Alvarez will be called up
The Tigers will be without one of their best hurlers on Sunday as Anibal Sanchez will miss his start with shoulder stiffness. Jose Alvarez, who is dominating opponents in Triple-A, will start in his place.

Sanchez claims the issue is more with his upper back rather than his shoulder, according to MLB.com’s Jason Beck (via Kurt Mensching at Bless You Boys), but believes a few extra days of rest will help alleviate the problem.
Sanchez is 6-5 with a 2.65 ERA in 12 starts this season. He’s punched out 98 batters and issued just 19 free passes in 78 innings of work.
Alvarez, 24, is enjoying the best season of his eight-year minor league career. He’s 5-4 with a 2.42 ERA and struck out 76 batters while walking only 15 in 74 ⅓ innings.
To make room for Alvarez on the 40-man roster, the Tigers transferred reliever Octavio Dotel to the 60-day disabled list.
