Miguel Cabrera, Tigers working on contract extension, per report

Cabrera may shoot for the highest average annual value of a contract in MLB.

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

Miguel Cabrera and the Detroit Tigers hope to work out a contract extension "sooner than later," Jayson Stark of ESPN is reporting.

Cabrera signed an eight-year, $153.3 million contract extension with the Tigers before the 2008 season, which was the fourth-richest contract in baseball at the time it was signed. The third baseman is not eligible for free agency until after the 2015 season, but may want to work a contract out now while he has some leverage.

It would be difficult for the Tigers to not extend Cabrera, as they recently gave Justin Verlander a seven-year, $180 million contract extension. Detroit also gave Prince Fielder a 9-year, $214 million contract when Fielder was a free agent, so it would likely be a bad look to the fans if the team decided to plead poverty with the best player on the team.

Cabrera may try to sign for the highest average annual value in the league, and currently has the statistics to prove he is worth it. The 30-year-old has hit .368/.447/.653 this season after winning the AL MVP and hitting for the Triple Crown last season.
