MLB Draft 2013: Mike Yastrzemski, Cavan Biggio highlight bloodlines picks on Day 3

It certainly doesn’t hurt your chances of getting drafted if you have a famous last name.

USA TODAY Sports

Major League Baseball is filled with familial connections, and the Amateur Draft highlights the number of brothers, cousins, sons and grandsons trying to follow the path laid out by a family member before them. The third day of the draft saw a number of well-known names selected; some players with direct family ties to the team that drafted them, but others without.

Mike Yastrzemski might have the most famous name among the players selected on Saturday, as the Vanderbilt Commodores outfielder is the grandson of Boston Red Sox Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski. Cavan Biggio is not far behind Yastrzemski in terms of famous names, as the high school third baseman is the son of likely Houston Astros Hall of Famer Craig Biggio.

Having a relative currently associated with the team can help your chances of getting selected by that team. Josh Pettitte, son of New York Yankees starting pitcher Andy Pettitte; Kevin Kuntz, son of Kansas City Royals first base coach Rusty Kuntz; Jacob Heyward, brother of Atlanta Braves outfielder Jason Heyward; Torii Hunter Jr., son of Detroit Tigers outfielder Torii Hunter; Cody Young, nephew of Brewers Hall of Famer Robin Yount; and Ben Verlander, brother of Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander, were among the players selected by the organization their family member is currently associated with.
