Clay Buchholz injury: Red Sox RHP leaves game with stiff neck

Buccholz leads the league with a 1.71 ERA.

Jim Rogash

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Clay Buchholz had to leave his start against the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday with a stiff neck. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports called the injury "neck tightness."

Buchholz first started feeling the discomfort in the sixth inning, the pitcher told Ricky Doyle of NESN. Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick hit a line drive off the palm of Buccholz's glove. The ball ricocheted away, and Buccholz chased the ball behind the mound and unsuccessfully attempted to throw Kendrick out at first.

The right-handed pitcher stayed in the game following the play and didn’t leave his start until he had recorded two outs in the seventh inning. Buchholz had an impressive start, holding Los Angeles to two runs on six hits while throwing 104 pitches.

Buccholz improved to 9-0 on the season following the start, and has a 1.71 ERA through his first 12 starts of the season. Any long-term loss of Buchhoz would be a difficult blow to the Red Sox, who currently lead the New York Yankees by 1 1/2 games in the AL East.
