Mets option Ike Davis to Triple-A

The Mets made a flurry of roster moves following another weekend sweep against the Miami Marlins.

USA TODAY Sports

The New York Mets optioned three players to Triple-A following the team's loss to the Miami Marlins on Sunday, including struggling first baseman Ike Davis, general manager Sandy Alderson told Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com.

Outfielder Mike Baxter and reliever Robert Carson were also optioned to Las Vegas following the game. Alderson told Rubin, "This is not a staff issue. This is a player issue," so no changes are expected with the team's managerial staff.

Davis has been terrible offensively for the Mets, hitting .164/.245/.262 in over 204 plate appearances this season before Sunday’s game, when he went 0-for-3 and lowered his batting average to .161. The first baseman showed promise his rookie season, hitting .264/.351/.440 in 2010, but missed most of 2011 with an ankle injury. Davis struggled early in the first half of 2012, but recovered in the second half of the season, finishing with 32 home runs.

Mets spokesman Jay Horowitz told Rubin that Davis declined comment, but Daniel Murphy supported Davis, telling Rubin, "(Davis) is a professional and we will see him again."

The Mets will announce the corresponding roster moves following Las Vegas’ game on Sunday.
