Johnny Cueto injury update: Reds to slow down RHP’s rehab

Cueto has already missed six weeks this season with a strained right lat muscle.

USA TODAY Sports

The Cincinnati Reds will proceed with more caution during Johnny Cueto's current rehab process, writes Mark Sheldon of MLB.com.

The Reds placed Cueto on the disabled list for the third time this season on Saturday. A strained right lat muscle has been the culprit each time, so the team plans to give the starter plenty of time to heal and recover from the injury.

Cincinnati head trainer Paul Lessard discussed Cueto’s injury, telling Sheldon:

“It’s in the almost identical spot on the scan, over basically the scar tissue that had built up over that muscle. It’s a small, tiny tear that was healing. He just picked that scab, basically.”

Cueto is not expected to throw for the next few weeks, and the team has not set a timetable for his return.

The right-hander pitcher has only made nine starts this season, but pitched well when healthy, going 4-2 with a 3.33 ERA.

Tony Cingrani will replace Cueto in the rotation. The southpaw owns a 3.45 ERA in 12 appearances this season, and will face Barry Zito and the San Francisco Giants at Great American Ball Park on Wednesday.
