Anibal Sanchez injury update: Tigers RHP to make rehab start

Sanchez hopes to only make one rehab start before returning to Detroit.

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez will make a rehab start Monday night with High-A Lakeland, per Jesse Schmehl of MLive.

Leyland told Schmehl that he expects Sanchez’s next start to come at the major-league level, barring any setbacks. The starter is expected to throw 60 pitches in the rehab appearance, or in a simulated game if the weather does not cooperate, notes Tony Paul of the Detroit News.

Sanchez has not pitched for the Tigers since being removed in the fourth inning on June 15 against the Minnesota Twins. The right-handed pitcher had to skip his previous start with shoulder issues, and was placed on the DL following the Minnesota game.

The starter, who signed a 5-year, $80 million contract with Detroit in the off-season, has pitched well when healthy, as he is 6-5 with a 2.76 ERA in 13 starts. Sanchez has shown dominating stuff this season, striking out 101 batters in just 81 2/3 innings pitched.
