Around the Bases: Tuesday’s scores and highlights

Royals 3, Yankees 1: James Shields allowed one run over seven innings, and the Royals got a run in each of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to win this one. The Royals are now just one game under .500.

Athletics 2, Pirates 1: A two-run home run by Brandon Moss was the only run support the A's pitching staff needed, as Dan Straily and Co. managed to hold the Pirates to just one run.

Rangers 8, Orioles 4: Adrian Beltre went 4-for-4 with two home runs in this one, and the Rangers won comfortably after another good start from Martin Perez.

Indians 3, Blue Jays 0: Looking like the Ubaldo Jimenez from a few years ago, the Indians starter pitched seven innings and his bullpen helped preserve the shutout.

Phillies 4, Nationals 2: Cole Hamels allowed one run over eight innings, and the Phillies were able to actually score some runs for him for once. The Phillies continue to hang around the periphery of the playoff race.

White Sox 11, Tigers 4: Alex Rios was 6-for-6 in this one, which was the biggest story. But also Justin Verlander allowed five earned runs and continues to struggle. Any time the MLB.com headline can read as "White Sox unveil new hit label in Motown," we all win.

Braves 6, Marlins 4: Justin Upton hit a home run in this one, and Julio Teheran was excellent for seven innings.

Rays 4, Twins 1: No earned runs and six innings later, Chris Archer had the Rays in line to continue their winning ways. Kelly Johnson and Matt Joyce each had a pair of RBIs.

Cubs 7, Angels 2: Four home runs and a solid outing from Travis Wood allowed the Cubs to cruise over the Angels. The Cubs are just 40-48 this season, for what it's worth.

Brewers 2, Reds 0: A complete-game shutout from Wily Peralta and the Brewers help the Reds continue their backwards slide in the NL Central.

Cardinals 9, Astros 5: Despite a 9-1 lead going into the ninth, the Cardinals would have to bring in Edward Mujica to get the save at the end.

Dodgers 6, Diamondbacks 1: Drama, action, heart, hustle, Puig GIF. It's almost like these teams don't like each other or something.

But leave it up to good ol' Jason Kubel to lighten the mood!

Padres 2, Rockies 1: A complete effort from Eric Stults gave the Padres the win in this one, as they held off a late rally from Colorado.

Mets 10 Giants 6: New York broke open a tie game with five runs in the eighth inning, including four on a grand slam off the bat of Marlon Byrd. Neither starting pitcher had a particularly good day: Mets starter Dillon Gee and Giants hurler Barry Zito each allowed five runs.

Red Sox 11 Mariners 8: The starting pitchers allowed a combined 13 runs on 14 hits in the game, and neither of them made it into the fourth inning. However, the Red Sox bullpen allowed just a run in 6⅔ innings of action, while the Mariners' pen gave up five unanswered runs. That made all the difference. Five Red Sox hit home runs.
