However, manager Terry Collins said that Harvey’s passing over has more to do with limiting the right-hander’s workload and giving him a rest before the All-Star Game festivities.
Harvey maxed out at 169⅓ innings between Triple-A and the big leagues last season, so they’re likely to keep a very close eye on his workload in the second half. Collins said that the club may limit Harvey’s innings per start in the second half rather than skip over him in the rotation so that he can keep pitching through the end of the season.
The right-hander put up stellar numbers in the first half, posting a 2.35 earned-run average and an NL-best 10.2 strikeouts per nine over 130 innings of work.
Torres, 30, has not made a big-league start since 2010, when he was a member of the White Sox. The journeyman right-hander has found new life pitching out of the Mets' bullpen this season, posting a career-best 0.51 earned-run average and 7.50 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 17⅔ innings.
