Yu Darvish injury: Rangers RHP placed on DL with strained trapezius muscle

Yu Darvish will miss Thursday’s start for the Rangers and the 2013 MLB All-Star Game due to a strained right trapezius muscle.

Jesse Johnson-US PRESSWIRE

Yu Darvish is headed to the 15-day disabled list with a slightly strained right trapezius muscle, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. However, because the move is retroactive to this past Sunday, the Texas Rangers right-handed pitcher will miss just one scheduled start and the 2013 MLB All-Star Game.

Assistant general manager Thad Levine said that if the injury had occurred at another point of the season, the team would have simply skipped Darvish's turn in the rotation. The All-Star break gives Darvish some extra time to rest and allows the Rangers a chance to add a player from the minors. According to the Star-Telegram, fellow righties Ross Wolf and Neil Ramirez are the leading candidates to replace Darvish.

Darvish reportedly felt fatigue in his upper back after a bullpen session Monday. On Wednesday, he told pitching coach Mike Maddux that he would not be able to pitch the finale of the team's four-game series against the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday. Darvish will fly from Baltimore to Arlington, Texas, on Thursday for a precautionary examination with team physician Keith Meister.

Darvish will be eligible to come off the DL on July 22, in time for the start of a four-game series against the New York Yankees. He earned an All-Star nod on the strength of an 8-4 record, a 3.04 ERA, 157 strikeouts and 1.05 WHIP.
