Since breaking into the Major Leagues with the Twins in 1997, current Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz has been swinging his way into record books. He set another record on Wednesday by doubling off Aaron Harang during the second inning of Boston's game against the Mariners. That double broke the all-time record for hits by a designated hitter.

Ortiz has been slugging his way into record books since 1997. He broke a new one on Wednesday by topping Harold Baines’ all time record for hits by a designated hitter.

Harold Baines had previously held the record with 1,688 hits while spending time with five different American League teams. Ortiz tied that record on Tuesday when he collected four hits against the Mariners, including two doubles and a home run.

Ortiz, 37, already holds all-time DH records in runs scored (1,018), home runs (370) and RBI (1,208), amongst others. He joined the Red Sox in 2003 and saw his career take off. Ortiz finished in the top-5 of AL MVP voting for five consecutive seasons after signing with Boston. He has played some first base, but has spent the vast majority of his career at DH.
Ortiz extended his record by hitting a two-run homer in the third inning of Wednesday’s contest.
