Rockies to activate Dexter Fowler; Troy Tulowitzki still questionable

Colorado will get its center field back on Thursday, but its shortstop may still be a few days away from returning.

The Colorado Rockies are expected to activate center fielder Dexter Fowler from the disabled list on Thursday, but his rehab counterpart Troy Tulowitzki may need a few more days before he's reinstated, reports Thomas Harding of MLB.com.

Fowler hasn’t played since June 25 because of right wrist strain, while Tulowitzki has missed nearly a month with a fractured rib.

Both players rejoined the club in Los Angeles on Wednesday after a two-game rehab stint with Triple-A Colorado Springs. It was thought that Fowler and Tulo could be activated prior to Thursday’s game, but manager Walt Weiss said that the club’s All-Star shortstop needs to be re-evaluated before they put him back in the lineup. Weiss added that Tulo, 28, will be watched very carefully and will wear rib protection on the field.

The Rockies are likely hoping to get Tulowitzki back in the lineup sooner rather than later, as the club has gone 9-16 since he hit the DL, falling back to four games under .500. Tulo, 28, was batting a stellar .347/.413/.635 with 16 home runs through 61 games when he went down last month.

Fowler, 27, will likely be back in the leadoff spot Thursday night to help the Rockies take on the division rival Dodgers. The switch-hitter is off to a great start this season, batting .291/.390/.473 with 10 home runs in 304 plate appearances.

The Rockies are expected to option outfielder Corey Dickerson back to Triple-A to make room on the roster for Fowler.
