Derek Jeter’s first 2013 hit has him 10 from the top-10 all-time

Jeter’s first hit this season is an important one on his march through the record books.

Derek Jeter had not played in 2013 at the major-league level until Thursday, when he was finally activated from the 60-day disabled list to face the Royals. Batting second in New York, Jeter came to the plate in the bottom of the first, and announced his return to the world with... okay, a dinky little single to third base. It's a hit in the box score, though, as good as any other single:

Jeter-1st-2013-h

That base hit has significance beyond just signaling that the Yankees' shortstop is back in his rightful place. It's career hit 3,305 for Jeter, putting him just 10 hits away from tying Hall of Fame second baseman Eddie Collins for 10th-most all-time, and 11 out from securing that 10th spot all to himself. Unless things go seriously wrong for Jeter from here on out, he should be able to reach that goal before the month of July comes to an end. As today reminds, he won't even need good-looking base knocks to get there.
