Derek Jeter injury: Yankees SS had quad tightness, will have MRI

Just one game into his 2013 season, Derek Jeter will undergo an MRI due to quad tightness.

USA TODAY Sports

Derek Jeter took four at-bats in his 2013 New York Yankees debut before running into injury troubles again. According to reports, the shortstop began suffering tightness in his quad during his third at-bat against the Kansas City Royals on Thursday, and will be given an MRI. Manager Joe Girardi stressed that the injury had nothing to do with the fractured ankle Jeter suffered in the 2012 ALCS last season.

Jeter commented on the injury after the 8-4 win, via MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch:

“I felt good up until that point. We’ll see,” Jeter said. “I hope it’s not a big deal.”

Jeter reportedly told Girardi that he will be able to play Game 1 of the Yankees' three-game series with the Minnesota Twins on Friday. Girardi could only comment to the media, "we'll see."

Jeter hit a single on the first pitch he faced in the majors since fracturing his ankle against the Detroit Tigers roughly nine months ago, a grounder to third that Miguel Tejada couldn't handle. He finished Thursday's game 1-for-4 with a RBI as the Yankees' designated hitter. Girardi said that he is inclined to keep Jeter at DH rather than shortstop if Jeter is able to play Friday.
