Matt Holliday injury: Cardinals OF has right hamstring tightness, leaves game

The Cardinals are not having an excellent night at the plate Thursday, and losing Matt Holliday only compounds that problem.

USA TODAY Sports

Cardinals left fielder Matt Holliday had to leave Thursday night's game vs. the Cubs early with tightness in his right hamstring, reports Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

First baseman Allen Craig was moved to left field to replace Holliday, and Matt Adams took over first base for Craig. If Holliday has to miss significant time, this would be the likely arrangement for the Cardinals defensive alignment, as Adams has been successful at the plate in limited at-bats this season.

Adams, 24, is hitting .322 with seven home runs in limited playing time so far in 2013.

The team's other appealing contingency plan would be to go to uber-prospect Oscar Taveras, but Taveras is dealing with an injury of his own at Triple-A.

Holliday, 33, is hitting .269 with 13 home runs in 2013 for the Cardinals. He has been one of their most consistent hitters over the past few seasons, and losing his presence in the middle of the lineup could be a big blow to a team, even when given the Cardinals’ plethora of replacement options.
