MLB trade rumors: Arizona Diamondbacks interested in Jake Peavy

Peavy may be reunited with former Padres and current Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers.

USA TODAY Sports

The Arizona Diamondbacks have discussed acquiring Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Jake Peavy, reports Buster Olney of ESPN.com.

A left rib fracture has sidelined the pitcher since June 4, but Peavy threw 76 pitches in a simulated game on Tuesday, according to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune. The right-hander is expected to make his first rehab start on Sunday with the Double-A Birmingham, per Solomon Crenshaw Jr. of AL.com.

Peavy made 11 starts for the White Sox before heading to the DL, going 6-4 with a 4.30 ERA. The starter fanned 66 batters in 67 innings, his highest K/9 since 2009.

Diamondbacks general manger Kevin Towers is familiar with Peavy; Towers drafted Peavy as the general manager of the San Diego Padres, then signed the starter to a contract extension. A decrease in payroll forced Towers to trade Peavy to the White Sox in '09.

Chicago has sent scouts to watch the Diamondbacks, and have seen starting pitcher Randall Delgado, according to Olney. Arizona acquired Delgado in the trade that sent Justin Upton to the Atlanta Braves. The 23-year-old has made 5 starts for the Diamondbacks this year, posting a 3.82 ERA over 33 innings.
