Donald Fehr could return to MLBPA, per report

MLBPA officials have discussed bringing the former union chief back in the fold.

The MLB Players Association have discussed bringing back former MLBPA union chief and current NHLPA director Donald Fehr, sources told Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports.

Less than a year ago, current MLBPA union chief Michael Weiner was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Weiner is on his fourth round of cancer treatments, according to Passan, but plans to attend the Home Run Derby and All-Star Game at Citi Field.

The talks are in the preliminary stages, as sources told Passan that Fehr has not discussed a potential return and has shown no inclination to leave the NHLPA. MLBPA officials, however, want to create a contingency plan for Weiner while respecting the continuing work of the current union chief.

Fehr led the baseball union for 26 years, ceding the position to Weiner in 2009. Fehr then joined the NHLPA, and helped lead the hockey players through a 119-day lockout this past NHL season.

Weiner helped orchestrate the current collective-bargaining agreement, which runs through the 2016 season. It will mark the 21st consecutive year of labor peace, the longest in American professional sports.
