Brett Lawrie could return to the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday

Lawrie may spend time at second and third base when he returns to the team.

USA TODAY Sports

Toronto Blue Jays infielder Brett Lawrie could return to the team on Friday, general manager Alex Anthopoulos told reporters Thursday, including Mike Rutsey of the Toronto Sun.

Lawrie has been sidelined for over a month with a left ankle sprain. The infielder suffered the injury attempting to steal second base against the Atlanta Braves on May 27.

The right-handed hitter struggled at the plate to begin the season, hitting .209/.268/.374 in 153 plate appearances.

Lawrie has spent most of his time with the Blue Jays at third base, but may play some second base when he returns. Toronto originally considered moving Lawrie to second base when Jose Reyes went on the DL earlier in the season, according the the Associated Press, but the team is more serious about the switch this time around, reports Richard Griffin of the Toronto Star.

Anthopolous is leaving the decision up to manager John Gibbons, telling reporters:

“It’s up to Gibby. I think it just gives Gibby options. If he has to play him at second or third, he can do that...I think Gibby likes the potential of him and (Jose) Reyes up the middle from a defensive standpoint, which I agree with.”

The Blue Jays may look to acquire a third baseman before the non-waiver deadline, Brendan Kennedy of the Toronto Star speculates.
