Clayton Richard injury: Padres LHP to undergo season-ending surgery

The surgery will help alleviate the pressure on Richard’s left AC joint.

USA TODAY Sports

San Diego Padres starting pitcher Clayton Richard will undergo season-ending surgery on his left shoulder as soon as next week, reports Corey Brock and Jamal Collier of MLB.com.

Richard has been on the disabled list since June 22 with the shoulder injury. The surgery will shave part of his left clavicle so he will not have future problems with his AC joint, which is located at the juncture of the shoulder and clavicle.

The timing of the surgery will not allow for Richard to rest and rehabilitate in time to return this season. The MRI, however, showed no damage to the AC joint in his shoulder, a silver lining for Richard.

The southpaw had struggled heavily before being shut down with the injury, going 2-5 with a 7.05 ERA in 52 2/3 innings. Richard posted sub-4.00 ERA's for San Diego the past three seasons since coming over from the Chicago White Sox, so the team hopes that a healthy Richard can return to form in 2014.
