Stephen Strasburg has worst start of his career vs. Marlins

Stephen Strasburg entered his start on Friday with a career 2.77 ERA against the Marlins. That number got a lot larger thanks to Giancarlo Stanton and company.

Washington Nationals hurler Stephen Strasburg had the worst start of his career on Friday night against the Miami Marlins.

Less than a year after allowing seven runs -- five earned -- on nine hits in a loss to the Marlins in what was his worst career start, Strasburg one-upped himself by surrendering seven earned runs on five hits and four walks on Friday. He lasted just two innings this time, setting a new benchmark for personal futility in the Nationals’ 8-3 loss.

Among the damage was an opposite-field, two-run home run off the bat of Giancarlo Stanton, who entered the game hitting .375/.412/.813 in 16 career plate appearances against Strasburg.

After falling into a 3-0 hole in the top of the first inning, the Marlins sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom half of the opening frame and took a 5-3 lead. Strasburg faced five more hitters in the second inning before being pulled in favor of Ross Ohlendorf, who struck out four batters and allowed just one hit in four scoreless innings.

Even with the bad start, Strasburg still boasts a sub-3.00 ERA in 2013.
