Jarred Cosart nearly pitches no-hitter in MLB debut, then gets optioned to Triple-A
It’s not every day a rookie takes a no-hitter into the seventh inning. Even more rare when it’s in his MLB debut. Houston’s Jarred Cosart did just that before being optioned back to Triple-A.

Cosart took a no-hitter into the seventh inning against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday, which is a special accomplishment considering the game was Cosart's major league debut. The 23-year-old right-hander finished with eight innings of shutout ball and allowed just two hits in Houston's 2-1 win.
His reward? A demotion to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
In all fairness to the Astros, the likely reason for optioning Cosart is because the team wants to keep him on a four-day rest schedule during the All-Star break, ensuring that his starting schedule goes uninterrupted. Still, it’s not every day that you see a pitcher be sent to the minors directly after a performance like that of Cosart’s.
When asked by Astros beat reporter Brian T. Smith for his thoughts on the demotion, Cosart’s response was simple:
“It’s motivation.”
Assuming he gets recalled after the All-Star break, Cosart would be scheduled to make his next big-league start at home against the AL West-leading Oakland A’s the week after next.
